Special Education Parent Workshop
If you are the parent of a child with special needs, and they are a student in a public charter school or public district school, be ready to do some big-time advocating to ensure that they receive the special education services they need.
Advocating for your child with special needs is very important. However, it can be very intimidating to a parent as they sit down the first time and each time thereafter, in front of educated professionals who claim to be doing what is best for your child.
A typical Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) meeting consists of a general education teacher, a special education teacher, a psychologist or social worker and a parent. A parent is almost always outnumbered at this meeting and if the parent has no understanding of special education they can be easily confused and intimidated. No one likes to hear that their child isn't meeting educational goals or that their child isn't doing well in school.
You must know the law and your rights as a parent of a special education child in order to navigate the special education maze and ensure your child's right to a free appropriate public education (FAPE).
Our workshop will help you:
- Develop an understanding of which laws and regulations impact the education of students with special needs such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
- Develop an understanding of the scope and breath of special education and related services available to students declared eligible to receive such services.
- Develop an understanding of the special provisions for school discipline involving a student with disabilities and protections for students qualifying, but not yet declared eligible for special education.
- Develop an understanding of the various processes for resolving disputes concerning special education issues.
- Learn tactics and strategies for effective advocacy
- Introduce you to other parents who have successfully navigated the special education maze.
